Maabwe Bay & Camp Maabwe

Maabwe Bay & Camp Maabwe is ideally located between Mlibizi and Binga, on the shores of the gorgeous Lake Kariba, making it the perfect spot to stop for a few days when self-driving around Lake Kariba. Maabwe is 280kms from Victoria Falls and 400kms from Bulawayo, with Mlibizi 63kms away and Binga 62kms. S17 48.465 E27 09.365

Maabwe offers 3 different types of accommodation that are split between “Maabwe Bay” or “Camp Maabwe”. They are as below:

Maabwe Bay

  • 3 x self-catering chalets
  • 1 x Exclusive camp site
  • 1 x Group camp site

Camp Maabwe

  • 1 x Exclusive camp site
  • 1 x Group camp site

Maabwe Bay

Self-catering chalets

Unit #1
This is the most popular chalet and is located next door to the owners’ house, closest to the bay, along the bottom of the property. There are 2 en-suite bedrooms (the 2nd bedroom being accessed via an outside door) and both bedrooms have 2 x ¾ beds, aircon as well as overhead ceiling fans. The en-suite bathrooms have a toilet, shower and basin. Water is heated via a solar geyser.

The unit has an open-plan lounge and kitchen with all the amenities to self-cater, including a fridge/freezer and chest freezer, gas stove, microwave, kettle, toaster and storage cupboard. The lounge leads out on to the verandah which has a seating area that overlooks the bay. There is an outdoor shower and splash pool that are very popular with guests, and an additional one plate gas stove and charming firepit.

Unit #3

Located on the hill at the back of the property, Unit 3 is ideal for a couple travelling on a budget and wanting a break from camping. The unit is one bedroomed with twin beds with an en-suite bathroom with toilet, shower and basin. It has an overhead fan and aircon. The kitchenette on the front verandah has a gas cooker and small fridge and looks out over the property. Water is heated via solar and there is a firepit to add extra comfort to your stay.

The Old House

The Old House is so named as this is where the owners originally lived when they first moved to the area, and it is also set up on the hill at the back of the property. There are 2 bedrooms that are both en-suite. They each have twin ¾ beds with overhead fans (one of the bedrooms does also have aircon). The en-suite bathrooms both have a shower, toilet and basin. Water is heated via electricity.

Adjacent to the first bedroom is the large, fully equipped kitchen which includes fridge/freezer, gas stove, microwave, kettle, toaster and storage cupboard. Running along the entire front of the house is a beautiful wooden verandah and is the most popular morning coffee/sunset sundowners spot! A unique added feature is the small braai attached to the side of the verandah.

Chris Camp (Exclusive Camp Site)

The exclusive camp site is located just as you enter, on the right hand side, and looks towards the bottom of the bay. There is room for 2 x rooftop tents/ground tents and a max pax of 4 people. As well as the ablution block, there is also an outdoor shower which is a fun add. The running cold and hot water is provided by “donkey boilers.” There are round plug points for charging at the small covered area at the front of the ablution, as well as a braai area. For those who are enthusiastic “twitchers”, a little area has been cleared in the bush below the site that overlooks the bottom of the bay and is a great bird watching spot.

Main Camp Site

This main camp site can take up to 6 or 7 vehicles and a max pax of around 12-14 people. There is a central thatched “lapa” where the group can meet for meals, with a braai area. There are round plug points for charging, as well as a braai area (but please be aware of the thatch and take care not to let any embers go near it. The group then shares an ablution block up on the hill behind the site. Running water is provided, with the hot water being heated by “donkey boilers”.

Maabwe Bay is on the national grid when it comes to electricity, but there is a 3KVA generator as back up in case of power outages. The water is straight from the lake and therefore not drinkable, but the owners do provide containers of drinking water. All the units are serviced daily and hand soap, toilet paper and washing up liquid is also provided. Guests at Maabwe Bay also have access to the site’s Starlink for WiFi connection.

*Mosquito nets can be provided upon request
*Laundry can be provided upon request.
*Meals can also be provided so long as they are pre-ordered.

Camp Maabwe

A short 10 minute drive from Maabwe Bay (enclosed in the same fenced off property) is Camp Maabwe, that has both a Group Camp Site as well as a private camp site.

Group Camp Site

This main group camp site can take up to 6 vehicles and a max pax of around 12 people. There is a large covered main entertainment area where the group can meet for meals, with multiple round plug points for charging. There is a braai area and shared ablution block and a single outdoor shower. Running water is provided, with the hot water being heated by “donkey boilers”.

Keith’s Camp (Exclusive Camp Site)

This exclusive camp site is located past the Group Camp Site, and there is room for 2 x vehicles and a max pax of 4-8 people. Guests here have their own private ablution block. There is running cold and hot water is provided by “donkey boilers.” There is a braai area and electrical round plug points for charging items, as well as a braai area.

The entire property (being Maabwe Bay & Camp Maabwe) has a fence around it and is gated.

Please note all plug points are the “Round” ones from South Africa

Maabwe is an ideal place to spend a few days to relax and recharge your batteries, with lovely views of the lake to compliment it. The camp sites are well maintained and the chalets have everything you need.

The trip was all you could ask for when you want to relax and forget about the world....

Captain Godrey and his team consisting Pilot, Chef Takesure and Silas made our stay comfortable and easy. The food was flavourful and filling. You couldn’t say no to Chef Takesure’s meals. Silas kept our cooler box ready every day because he knew we loved our drinks cold and first thing in the morning. Pilot and Captain Godfrey took us to amazing views, magical sunset cruises and helped me find all the crocodiles I was looking for.

I totally recommend Heartveld Adventures for all your Kariba fantasies! ☀️⛴️🍹#February2025

Right from when I started researching the trip in November last year, Bryony has been an absolute... star. Nothing was ever too much hassle, especially with the rigours of trying to effect payment then!

Then the houseboat in Kariba! What an amazing trip we had on the Ponty, and once again Bryony organised transfers and things on the spot, awesome and a big thank you to you and Char, the Ponty was the highlight of our Zim Epic!

I cannot recommend Bryony and Heartveld Adventures enough, was so good to meet you at Charara,

Cheers and thanks again

When planning our trip to Zimbabwe we came across Bryony by chance using google. Boy were we lucky.... We wanted a houseboat on Kariba and gave the task to Bryony. We’d already got flights from Harare to Kariba booked which she kindly offered to arrange as well. Anyway, from the moment we arrived in Kariba Airport we were in looked after. Transport was arrange to collect our party of 5 and bring us to the Big 5 Lodge for one night. The advice we got was to get on the houseboat early so we had a look around Kariba ready for an early start the next day. We got a lift from the lodge manager to the dam and he gave us a tour of it which was informative and interesting. The Big 5 Lodge was a great suggestion and we had dinner there as well. Up early the next day we were collected and brought to our boat, the Somabhula. We were introduced to our captain Joe, cook Dominic and crew member Witness. These lads were excellent, professional and made our trip stress free. They cooked fabulous food and taught us how to fish. They knew all the good places to go game spotting. We had morning expeditions and evening sundowners and if you’ve never been on a houseboat in Kariba put it top of your to-do/wishlist. When we returned to Kariba Bryony had transportation ready to take us to the airport for our onward trip to Victoria Falls. All this was made possible by Bryony who arranged absolutely everything. This was done by email and Whatsapp from Ireland. Having confidence in a travel agent is imperative and if you need anything arranged in Zimbabwe you won’t find better than Bryony at Heartveld Adventures.read more

From the minute we started our plan to go on a houseboat for a family and friends reunion (post... Covid ) we were put onto Bryony to arrange. She gave us unbridled 5 star service from booking the boat Vunduful and all transfers to and from Harare to Kariba return.
Everything was great and our guests came from 3 different continents to get aboard the Vunduful who had a great crew too.
We had some amazing close up viewings and a fair few bream were caught daily.
Thank you all from the Upton family and friends.

Bryony at Heartveld Adventures recently organised the holiday of a lifetime in Kariba for my fiancé... and I.

We visited Bumi Hills Safari Lodge and Spa which is positioned on remote hills overlooking Lake Kariba. We reached the hotel via a small aeroplane and a short 20 minute flight which was brilliant. The scenery flying over Kariba and experience was amazing.

We had a magical stay and after a very warm welcome by the staff we were shown around... WOW! Such an absolutely beautiful place in a stunning setting. The staff there couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating.

Bumi is a small hotel with only 10 rooms, therefore it has a very intimate feel and so much attention to detail. A must to visit for a romantic, relaxing and yet exciting break away.

The range of activities is outstanding we stayed for 4 nights and went on game drives, game walks, sunset cruises, night time drives, evening sun downers to watch the sunset over the lake and visited the local Tonga village. Our guide ‘Little Max’ was fantastic, very knowledgable and made every effort to ensure we did everything we wanted.

It was often just my Fiancé and I doing the activities, so it was a very personal experience. We were even lucky enough to meet the resident lion pride and to take part in a valiant effort to rescue an elephant stuck along the edge of Lake Kariba. Quite an adventure!

Both my Fiancé and I would like to say a HUGE thank you to Bryony at Heartveld Adventures, who organised this trip for us. We live in the UK and our stay at Bumi was a small but very memorable part of our overall holiday to Zimbabwe where we were visiting family.

Bryony organised every last detail of our trip and ensured that it was completely stress free from start to finish.

Based on a very positive suggestion from a friend of ours, we booked a week at the Kariba Safari... lodge through this amazing team. The service and response we received was beyond excellent and deserves a 5-star recognition.

Bryony was extremely helpful, diligent and experienced and helped us plan an amazing family holiday which included several children. Several accommodations were made for our personal comforts and we were blown away by the fast and friendly service.

There really are no words other than to recommend them for any of your travel plans.

Thank you again for an amazing holiday and we are looking forward to the trip you are currently planning for us ☺️
