Jecha Point Fishing Lodge

Jecha Point Fishing Lodge is a comfortable family-owned and run lodge situated on the banks of the Zambezi River, below Chirundu Town on the Zimbabwean side. Access to the lodge is usually by road, being only 2.3kms from Chirundu Town (GPS coordinates: S16 01.603 E028 52.582).

Guests can charter flights into the nearest airstrip, which is Chirundu Estates gravel airstrip (GPS coordinates: 15°59’52.3″S 28°53’57.1″E) Staff will organise transfers from the airstrip, as well as from the Chirundu border post, if guests arrive from Zambia.

Jecha Point overlooks the mighty Zambezi River, with green lawns and wide open spaces, which often attract the resident wildlife.  The lodge can comfortably accommodate up to 16 guests, usually on a self-catering basis, but fully catered is also available if requested in advance.

For those wanting to camp, there is a nicely lawned and shaded area available, with 2 separate camping sites. They each have braai stands, communal ablutions, a communal splash pool for campers, plus water and power points.

There is a cool swimming pool, available for lodge guests at the front of the main lodge, overlooking the Zambezi River (please note that swimming is at your own risk).  Adjacent to the pool is probably the most popular feature of the lodge, a fire-pit area overlooking the river, which is the perfect location to watch the sunset with a cool drink in hand

The lodge consists of 6 chalets in total, comprising:

  •             4 x en-suite open air chalets sleeping 2 guests each;
  •             1 x family open air chalet which sleeps 4 adults;
  •             1 x Fisherman’s Cottage, air conditioned, which sleeps 4 adults.

2 Sleeper Chalets
All rooms have 3/4 size beds & tea/coffee facilities. These four chalets are booked as a whole and guests have access to the main dining area & kitchen.

4 Sleeper Chalet
A family chalet with two separate rooms, each room has 3/4 size beds, an en-suite bathroom and overhead fan and mosquito nets. The kitchenette has a gas stove top cooker, cutlery, crockery, fridge, 6 seater dining table, braai and fire-pit.

Fisherman’s Cottage
A family chalet with two separate rooms, each room has 3/4 size beds, with one en-suite bathroom having a shower, while the other has a bath.  It is fully air conditioned with mosquito nets.  Comes with a fully equipped kitchen, fridge, freezer and gas stove and braai stand. There is a large lockable veranda with a 6 seater dining table. To be booked as a whole unit. Can sleep up to 6 with extra beds.

Laundry can be done on a daily basis upon request, charged per item.  Firewood, bait and ice are available at the office for an extra charge.
There is also a limited number of soft drinks, water and beers available if guests have run short but the camp does not have a bar.

Jecha Point is linked to the national grid and appliances like hair dryers and electric shavers may be used, so long as there isn’t a power cut.  If the power does go out, there is a back-up generator able to supply the chalets.  The hot water is heated by electric & gas geysers. For guests travelling with valuables, there is a safe in the main house.  Phone signal is reasonable for all local networks & good for Zambian networks with decent 3G signal on most days. There is no open WIFI access for guests, if there is an emergency you may ask management for the office wifi code for work /medical related issues only.

The main activity participated in at the lodge is obviously their fishing charters.  Guests are welcome to bring their own boats, which can be securely moored every evening along the lodge’s shoreline.  Otherwise pontoon boats can be hired for a fee on a full or half day basis.  Sunset cruises are available upon request.

There are many species of fish to catch in the Zambezi, including the huge Vundu, Tigerfish, Catfish, Electric barbel, the rather odd looking and aptly named, Squeaker, Bream (tilapia) and Chessa. Jecha Point operates a strict catch-and-release policy and encourages good fishing practices like sufficient revival of the fish after a fight, before its release. They DO NOT allow guests to take fish home for ‘wall mounts’.  If you require this, a good quality photo and a quick measurement will be sufficient for your taxidermist to make a synthetic replica.

Jecha Point staff can also organise guided walks into a nearby game sanctuary upon request.  This activity has a per person price to cover food, drink and a donation to the park, as it is run purely on donor funds.
